Celiac disease (CD), also known as “celiac sprue”, is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the small intestine, produced by the ingestion of dietary gluten products in susceptible people. It is a multi-factorial disease, including genetic, environmental and many risk factors which hare explained in this map. Environmental trigger is represented by gluten while the genetic predisposition has been identified in the major histocompatibility complex region. Several potential causes of CD are listed and detailed in the CD Mind Map. This map also includes many risk factors in CD, including; nutritional deficiencies, skin diseases (Dermatitis herpetiformis), SIBO, neurological disorders, iron deficient anemia, first degree relatives, Type-1 diabetes, autoimmune thyroid disease, and many more.
CD is not a rare disorder like previously thought, with a global prevalence around 1%. The reason of its under-recognition is mainly referable to the fact that about half of affected people do not have the classic gastrointestinal symptoms, but they present nonspecific manifestations of nutritional deficiency or have no symptoms at all.
Thanks to advanced understanding of its pathogenesis, numerous therapeutic strategies have been devised for the treatment of celiac disease. In the CD Mind Map, many, if not all of these therapeutic strategies are explained in great detail for any health professional or patient inflicted with CD to easily understand.
